Overcoming a Creative Rut

We all get the occasional creative rut every now and then. Or if you're like me, every day, but who's counting aye. I haven't posted for a few weeks now because life got in the way with work placement, my mum getting married and a bunch of other excuses. Nonetheless I haven't felt creative in a long time. I ran out of ideas, motivation and the spark that makes you feel like you're onto something great.

I'm here today to share the pain with my fellow creatives and give my best tips on overcoming this dreadful time in your life. I've been trying really hard to deal with this problem as I really need some insight coming into third and final year at uni. I want to end with a bang and make the best work that I have ever made and just generally be proud of myself. Am I aiming too high?

Generally speaking someone that considers themselves creative, lacking that creativity can make you feel lost. Like you're missing something that's part of you. This has been bothering me for quite some time now as I've felt out of place hence my attempts to overcome it.

With the summer holidays in full swing, I have found this need to learn new things. Being away from uni has really made me miss learning everyday. I have recently signed up to Skillshare which has been a great opportunity for me to learn quickly and on the go. If you haven't heard of it, it's basically an online learning community for creators. I've been watching classes about blogger SEO, Google Analytics and also photography which is one of my recent pursuits. Go follow me on instagram to see some of my recent work and use my link to sign up for Skillshare. This isn't sponsored or anything, I'll just get some free months if you sign up and who doesn't want free education.

Over the past few months I've been on a placement at a marketing agency which has given me a lot off opportunities to do research and prepare for my last year at university. Studying Fashion Marketing and Branding you have to always be aware of what's trending whether that's in fashion or marketing as a whole. I've generally looked at online publications such as Marketing Week, Campaign and The Drum which give me a wider understanding of the current trends in marketing and the world. I also looked at trend forecasting websites such as WGSN which was more directed at the fashion industry. Lastly I've found some really interesting blogs discussing jobs and careers within the fashion industry, if you need some info about fashion buying Nicole Davidson is your gal! So get googling and learn new things!

Take a break
A few weeks ago I went on a holiday which was a nice opportunity for me to step back from everything and focus my thoughts. We took a family holiday with the auntie and cousins to Tenerife for about a week. We stayed in Los Abrigos which is in the South of Tenerife and is famous for the natural pools (of which we didn't see, guess they're not that famous). I took a lot of walks along the beach and just watched the waves which was very soothing. I had some time to think about my future, what I'll want to do after I graduate, where I want to go with my blog and everything else that has been on my mind. I think we all need to have a break every now and then and consider what is really important to us. I've heard a social media detox is another way to do this and can be quite effective. I'll keep you guys updated if I attempt this myself.

Hope this post has given you guys something to think about and a way to get your creative juices flowing. What else do you do when you get in a creative rut? I'd love to hear your stories and tips so I can also try them out.

Thanks for reading,

  1. It's comforting to read that I'm not the only one who finds it hard getting out of a rut, or taking a break. To me a few weeks doesn't seem like that long. Four days ago I finally did my first post since October 1st of 2017 (over 10 months). I had been squirrelling away bits of writing etc. for quite a while. Then National Underwear Day came along - it fits in with my lingerie fashion blog's theme.
Thank you for the tips! There's nothing wrong with aiming high.
P.S.: I love the outfit in the upper left photo in the second image and the contrast with the outfit in the last photo. The locales for both are beautiful.

National Underwear Day 2018, Panties in the News, Panty Modelling Fail, Thanks to Commenters

    1. Thank you for your kind words! Good luck with everything!
